Nordmann Fir - Abies nordmanniana.- Originating from the mountains around The Black Sea in Turkey, Georgia, Russian Caucasus and Northern Armenia, the Nordmann Fir is actually a large, evergreen tree, growing up to 60m tall with some specimens reaching 85m, the tallest trees in Europe. It is popular as a Christmas Tree because it has large, lush green, blunt tipped needles that don't drop readily when the tree starts to dry out. The species is named after Alexander von Nordmann who was a Professor of Botany at Odessa. We specify that our seedlings are from seed colected in the Georgian area of Ambrolauri / Tulagi which is where our own seed supply comes from. With Nordmann Firs the effort is to get them to grow to 1m tall, then they take off quite quickly although with a large seed they produce a good looking seedling quickly and we give surplus away at Christmas Fairs to those who want a home grown Christmas Tree. Note the size though, not an ideal garden specimen! Click on the image to enlarge it.
Fraser Fir - Abies fraseri.- Our seeds come from Virginia, the Southern Appalachian Mountains and we try to specify that our 2u2 seedlings are also from seed sourced there. In our mind, this is the best location for strong seed stock. As with the Nordmann Fir, this is a needlefast tree, with small blunt needles. It can grow to about 30m tall. It has a very strong scent, sort of citrus pine. The species is named after a Scottish botanist, John Fraser, who explored the Appalacian Mountains in the late 18th Century. Fraser Firs have a narrower habit than Nordmanns, suiting them to smaller rooms and halls. As with Nordmann the trick is to get them to about 1m tall after which time they fairly much look after them selves. This tree can be pot grown and can make a good garden specimen.
